18:T1282,Kitesurfing in Essaouira comes down to one simple promise: wind almost every day, a huge bay, and water that never really gets cold. Whether you are planning your first trip or your tenth season, here is the complete guide — wind, spots, seasons, levels and budget — written by the Windy Essaouira team, on the water here all year round.

## Why Essaouira is a reference kitesurf spot

Essaouira is nicknamed the city of wind, and that is no marketing line. The north-east trade wind funnels into the bay every afternoon with a regularity that is rare elsewhere. The beach runs for several kilometres, the water is open, and there is almost always room to set up your kite. For background on the town and its climate, [Essaouira on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essaouira) is a good start.

## Wind in Essaouira, month by month

The kite season runs from March to October. Here is what to expect by period. Before coming, we check [the Windguru forecast for Essaouira](https://www.windguru.cz/48772) every day.

| Period | Wind | Water | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| March–May | 12–18 knots | 17–18°C | Learning, calm sessions |
| June–August | 18–25 knots | 20–22°C | High season, all levels |
| September–October | 15–20 knots | 19–21°C | Great sessions, fewer crowds |
| November–February | variable | 16–17°C | Surf rather than kite |

## The best kitesurf spots around Essaouira

Three stretches of water cover every level. We move with the wind of the day — the advantage of a mobile school.

### Diabat, the second beach — our spot

Eight minutes south of Essaouira, Diabat is the second beach, and it's where we run all our [kitesurf lessons in Essaouira](/en/kitesurf-essaouira). It's the best spot in town to ride: fewer people on the sand, no horses or camels, more space, and above all a cleaner, steadier wind than the main bay. You learn and progress safely, without weaving between swimmers. Once you're independent, it's also the ideal place to [rent kitesurf gear](/en/kitesurf-rental-essaouira).

### The main beach in the bay

The most famous beach, right in the town centre, and where the crowds go: swimmers, horse and camel rides, and a wind that's often gustier because of the town and buildings. Many schools stay there for convenience — we load the gear and head to Diabat, better on every count.

### Moulay Bouzerktoun

25 km north, Moulay is a world-famous spot, windier and more demanding, with chop for jumping. Reserved for advanced riders, often as a [guided downwind from Moulay to Essaouira](/en/downwind-moulay-bouzerktoun).

## Learning to kitesurf in Essaouira

Never touched a kite? Even better. The wind is steady, with no violent gusts, and space is never an issue. The progression is simple: kite control, body drag, then waterstart. Most students are riding within a few sessions. We break down every step in our [beginner kitesurf guide](/en/blog/apprendre-kitesurf-essaouira-debutant). For safety and teaching, we follow the IKO standards, applied by [certified instructors](/en/iko-certified-instructors).

## Progressing: intermediate and advanced

Already riding? Essaouira has plenty for you: water-relaunch, going upwind, then first jumps and tricks. To break a specific barrier — freestyle, strapless, transitions — a [personalised kitesurf coaching](/en/kitesurf-coaching-essaouira) session with Mohamed saves a lot of time.

## How much does kitesurfing in Essaouira cost

Good news: it is more affordable than in Europe. We have gathered all the 2026 prices — lessons, packs and camps — in our [kitesurf prices in Essaouira](/en/blog/prix-kitesurf-essaouira) article. For an all-in trip with accommodation, look at the [kitesurf holiday with villa](/en/kitesurf-holiday-essaouira).

## When to come kitesurfing in Essaouira

For reliable wind, aim for June to September. For milder conditions and fewer people, spring and autumn are perfect. The full calendar is in [when to kitesurf in Essaouira](/en/blog/meilleure-saison-kitesurf-essaouira).

## We take care of the gear

No need to bring your own board. Every session includes:

- A kite sized to your weight and the wind of the day

## Booking your session

We stay a small team, led by [Mohamed Achhibat](/en/kitesurf-instructor-essaouira), national kitesurf champion. The easiest way to book is WhatsApp: we reply within a few hours and set the dates around the weather. In high season, plan one to two weeks ahead.19:Taec,Where do you set up your kite in Essaouira? The bay offers a huge learning area, Diabat cleaner water, and Moulay Bouzerktoun a world-class spot for advanced riders. Here are the best kitesurf spots in Essaouira, and most importantly who each one is for.

## Diabat, the second beach: our lesson spot

Eight minutes south of the medina, Diabat is the second beach — and it's our go-to spot for [kitesurf lessons in Essaouira](/en/kitesurf-essaouira). It's the best in town to ride: fewer people on the sand, no horses or camels, more space, and a cleaner, steadier wind than the main bay. You learn and progress safely here, from your very first flight to riding independently. Once you're independent, it's also the perfect place to [rent kitesurf gear](/en/kitesurf-rental-essaouira).

## The main beach in the bay

The most famous beach, right in the centre, and where the crowds go: swimmers, horse and camel rides, and a wind that's often gustier because of the town. Lots of people and less clean conditions — which is why we'd rather load the gear and head to Diabat.

![Aerial view of the Diabat kitesurf spot in Essaouira](/images/blog/meilleurs-spots-kitesurf-essaouira/diabat-beach-kitesurf-essaouira.webp)

## Moulay Bouzerktoun: the spot for advanced riders

25 km north, Moulay Bouzerktoun is a world-famous spot. Windier, with chop and waves when the north swell comes in. It is a playground for freestyle and wave riding, but it is exposed and demanding: reserved for experienced riders. We often go there on a [guided downwind from Moulay to Essaouira](/en/downwind-moulay-bouzerktoun), or for [kitesurf coaching](/en/kitesurf-coaching-essaouira) to break a barrier.

## Spots at a glance

| Spot | Level | Wind | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Diabat | All levels | Clean, steady | Learn and progress (our spot) |
| Main beach (bay) | — | Gusty, crowded | The tourist beach |
| Moulay Bouzerktoun | Advanced | Strong, demanding | Freestyle, wave, downwind |

## Which spot for your level

- **Just starting or progressing** : Diabat, our lesson spot. Fewer people, no horses, cleaner wind.
- **Want the main beach** : the bay, busier and gustier, but central.
- **Comfortable upwind** : Moulay Bouzerktoun, for chop and waves.

## When to ride these spots

The kite season runs from March to October, with the strongest wind in July and August. We laid out the full calendar in [when to kitesurf in Essaouira](/en/blog/meilleure-saison-kitesurf-essaouira). For everything before you come, the [complete guide to kitesurfing in Essaouira](/en/blog/guide-kitesurf-essaouira) covers wind, spots, levels and budget.

## Booking a session

The easiest way is WhatsApp at +212 762-466351. We check the forecast, pick the right spot and set your dates within a few hours.1a:T896,When should you come kitesurfing in Essaouira? The short answer: from March to October, when the north-east trade winds blow almost every day. The detailed answer, month by month, is right below.

## The kitesurf season in Essaouira

Essaouira is one of the most consistent spots in the world. The north-east trade wind blows from March to October, peaking at 25 knots in July and August. To check day by day before you come, we follow [the Windguru forecast for Essaouira](https://www.windguru.cz/48772).

## The wind calendar, month by month

| Period | Wind | Water | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| March–May | 12–18 knots | 17–18°C | Learning, calm sessions |
| June–August | 18–25 knots | 20–22°C | High season, all levels |
| September–October | 15–20 knots | 19–21°C | Great sessions, fewer crowds |
| November–February | variable | 16–17°C | Surf rather than kite |

![Kitesurfing session in trade-wind conditions in Essaouira](/images/blog/meilleure-saison-kitesurf-essaouira/kitesurf-essaouira-action-vent.webp)

## March to May: the ideal season to learn

The wind builds gradually, 12 to 18 knots. Fewer crowds, gentler rates: this is the period we recommend to [learn kitesurf](/en/blog/apprendre-kitesurf-essaouira-debutant).

## June to August: the high season

18 to 25 knots almost daily, water at 20–22°C. The most reliable period to ride. [Diabat](/en/blog/meilleurs-spots-kitesurf-essaouira) offers steadier wind, Moulay Bouzerktoun chop for advanced riders.

## September to October: the sweet spot

15 to 20 knots, fewer tourists, and the best sunsets of the year. A safe bet for relaxed riding.

## November to February: surf season

The wind eases and the Atlantic swell comes in. This is surf season in Essaouira: Sidi Kaouki and Cap Sim take over. We cover them in our [surf spots in Essaouira](/en/blog/spots-surf-essaouira).

## So, when should you come?

For reliable wind, aim for June to September. For milder conditions and fewer people, spring and autumn are perfect. The [complete guide to kitesurfing in Essaouira](/en/blog/guide-kitesurf-essaouira) covers wind, spots, levels and budget. Book via WhatsApp at +212 762-466351.1b:T926,Never touched a kite before? Even better. Essaouira is arguably the best place in the world to learn kitesurf, and we'll walk you through exactly how your first lesson goes, how long it takes, and what to bring.

## Why learn to kitesurf in Essaouira

The wind is steady, with no violent gusts. [Essaouira bay and Diabat beach](/en/blog/meilleurs-spots-kitesurf-essaouira) have a sandy bottom, plenty of space and few waves — everything you need to learn safely. And the water stays pleasant from March to October, with no thick wetsuit in summer.

## The progression, step by step

1. Kite control on the beach, then in the water (body drag). We always start with safety: how to release the kite and use the quick release.
2. Advanced body drag and first waterstart attempts. You feel the kite's pull and start gliding.
3. Waterstart. The moment everything clicks — most of our students get there here.
4. Riding and going upwind. You become independent.

![Beginner kitesurf lesson in Essaouira](/images/blog/apprendre-kitesurf-essaouira-debutant/debutant-kitesurf-essaouira-cours.webp)

## How many lessons to get started

Plan around 3 sessions to nail the waterstart, and 5 to 6 to ride independently. It depends on the wind and your consistency. We teach to the IKO standards, applied by [certified instructors](/en/iko-certified-instructors), with a low ratio so you progress fast and safely.

## How much it costs

Group lessons start at €65 for 2 hours, private at €110. A 6h pack comes to €180 in a group (€315 private). The full breakdown is in our [kitesurf prices in Essaouira](/en/blog/prix-kitesurf-essaouira) article.

## What to bring

- Swimwear
- Sunscreen and water
- That's it: kite, board, harness, vest, helmet and wetsuit are provided

## Our tips to start well

- Book at least 3 sessions: kitesurfing needs repetition.
- Come between April and September for the best conditions — see [when to kitesurf in Essaouira](/en/blog/meilleure-saison-kitesurf-essaouira).
- To know everything before you come, read the [complete guide to kitesurfing in Essaouira](/en/blog/guide-kitesurf-essaouira).

## Booking your first lesson

22:T477,The coast around Essaouira offers waves for every level. Mohamed Achhibat has surfed here since childhood and knows every spot, every tide.

Essaouira Beach: the gateway. Gentle beach break, consistent whitewash. Perfect for first lessons. Walkable from the medina. Best at mid-rising tide.

Sidi Kaouki: 20km south. More powerful beach break. Lefts and rights at 1–2m. Fewer people than Essaouira. The village has cafes to warm up after the session. Windy Essaouira often heads here.

Cap Sim: rocky point break between Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki. Long left when NW swell hits. Intermediate level minimum. Dirt road access.

Imsouane: 1.5h south. Morocco's longest right-hander — 300m+ rides at the Cathedral. Windy Essaouira runs day-trip surf excursions. Fresh fish lunch at the port included.

Moulay Bouzerktoun: 25km north. Known more for kite, but also offers waves when north swell hits. Exposed spot, for experienced surfers.

Conditions: best surf season is October to March (North Atlantic swells). In summer, waves are smaller but enough for learning. Water at 16°C in winter (4/3 needed), 20–22°C in summer (3/2 or shorty).23:T415,Essaouira is one of the rare places where kitesurf and surf work at the same address. Both can be practiced here, but not always at the same time.

Conditions: kitesurfing needs wind (15–25 knots, March–October). Surfing needs swell (October–March for the best waves). In summer, the wind is too strong for comfortable surfing at Essaouira itself, but Sidi Kaouki and Cap Sim remain surfable.

Learning curve: surfing is more intuitive at first. You can stand up on your first lesson. Kitesurfing takes more time (3–5 sessions minimum to ride) but the sensation is incomparable.

Budget: surf starts at €25 for a 2h group lesson. Kitesurf at €65 for 2h. Kite costs a bit more because the gear is more technical.

Physical demand: surfing works the upper body (paddling). Kite works core and legs. Both require decent fitness.

Mohamed Achhibat's advice: "If you come in summer, kitesurf. If you come in winter, surf. If you come in spring or autumn, do both." At Windy Essaouira, we offer both — what matters is being on the water.24:Ta50,How much does a kitesurf lesson in Essaouira really cost? No vague ranges: here are Windy Essaouira's 2026 rates, what's included, and how to choose between group, semi-private and private lessons.

## Kitesurf lesson prices in Essaouira

All gear is included in every rate. The price depends on the format and the number of hours — and the more hours you book, the lower the hourly rate.

| Hours | Group | Semi-private (2 pax) | Private |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 2h | €65 | €90 | €110 |
| 4h | €125 | €175 | €215 |
| 6h | €180 | €255 | €315 |
| 8h | €230 | €330 | €405 |
| 10h | €275 | €400 | €490 |

## Which format to choose

- **Group lesson**: the best value, in a small group. Perfect to start without stretching the budget.
- **Semi-private**: two people, the sweet spot between price and instructor attention.
- **Private**: the fastest progress, the instructor all to yourself.

To book the format that suits you, everything is on the [kitesurf lessons in Essaouira](/en/kitesurf-essaouira) page.

## How many hours to get started

To reach the waterstart and ride on your own, aim for 6 to 10 hours. That's a 6h group pack at €180, or private at €315 to go faster. We break down the progression in the [beginner kitesurf guide](/en/blog/apprendre-kitesurf-essaouira-debutant).

![Kitesurf lesson with an instructor in Essaouira](/images/blog/prix-kitesurf-essaouira/cours-kitesurf-essaouira-moniteur.webp)

## The kitesurf holiday with accommodation

For an all-in trip, the package bundles the kite lessons, your stay (pool villa, medina riad or sea-view house), spot transfers and all the gear. Expect from €575 per person for a week (6 nights / 10h of kite) or €390 for a weekend (3 nights / 6h). Full details on the [kitesurf holiday in Essaouira](/en/kitesurf-holiday-essaouira) page.

## Renting gear without lessons

Already independent? [Kitesurf gear rental](/en/kitesurf-rental-essaouira) is €70 a day, €45 a half-day or €350 a week.

## What's always included

- A traction kite sized to the wind and your weight
- A twin-tip board
- Harness, impact vest and helmet
- A wetsuit for the season
- The guidance of [IKO-certified instructors](/en/iko-certified-instructors)

## Is it expensive?

In Europe, a private lesson often costs €90 to €130 for 2 hours. In Essaouira it's €110 — but with far more reliable wind and a national champion at your side. And in a group, at €65 for 2 hours, it's hard to find better to learn.

## Booking your session

The easiest way is WhatsApp at +212 762-466351. We confirm your dates around the weather, within a few hours.25:T929,Holding the waterstart but struggling to go upwind? Already riding but dreaming of getting airborne? Here is how to progress in kitesurf, step by step — and the mistakes that waste entire sessions.

## The 7 steps of progression

1. **Master the wind window.** Knowing where to place your kite to control power is the foundation of everything. We explain it in our article on [the wind window](/en/blog/fenetre-vent-kitesurf).
2. **Waterstart both ways.** Going left and right without thinking.
3. **Riding upwind.** The real milestone of independence: getting back to your start point instead of drifting.
4. **Controlling speed and stopping.** Managing the kite to slow down, stop and set off cleanly.
5. **Transitions.** Changing direction without putting the board down.
6. **The first jump.** Sending the kite at the right moment, taking off and landing softly.
7. **First tricks.** Grabs, small rotations, then freestyle.

## How long to progress

From waterstart to riding upwind on your own, plan 5 to 10 more hours after your first sessions. For jumps and tricks, a [personalised kitesurf coaching](/en/kitesurf-coaching-essaouira) session with Mohamed saves a lot of time. Starting from scratch? Begin with the [beginner guide](/en/blog/apprendre-kitesurf-essaouira-debutant).

![Rider progressing in kitesurf in Essaouira](/images/blog/progression-kitesurf-etapes/kitesurf-essaouira-freestyle.webp)

## The mistakes that slow you down

- Looking at your kite instead of the horizon
- Over-steering: too many bar movements kill control
- The wrong kite size for the day's wind — see [how to choose your gear](/en/blog/choisir-materiel-kitesurf)
- Not enough consistency: two sessions a month is slow

## Where to progress in Essaouira

Diabat is perfect for working upwind on open water. Moulay Bouzerktoun offers chop for first jumps. We pick the spot based on your goal of the day — see [the best kitesurf spots](/en/blog/meilleurs-spots-kitesurf-essaouira).

## Speeding up your progress

The recipe is simple: consistency, the right gear and an outside eye. [Coaching](/en/kitesurf-coaching-essaouira) with a national champion changes everything. To put it all in context, the [complete guide to kitesurfing in Essaouira](/en/blog/guide-kitesurf-essaouira) covers wind, spots and levels. Book via WhatsApp at +212 762-466351.26:T716,What kite size should you choose? Which board to start on? Kitesurf gear feels intimidating at first, but a few reference points are enough. Here's how to choose well, without overspending or getting it wrong.

## Kite size by wind

This is the most important choice. The more wind, the smaller the kite. Here's a reference for a rider around 75 kg:

| Wind (knots) | Kite size |
| --- | --- |
| 12–16 | 11–12 m² |
| 16–22 | 9–10 m² |
| 22–28 | 7–8 m² |
| 28 and up | 5–6 m² |

## Adjusting for your weight

The lighter you are, the smaller you go; the heavier, the bigger. Count about 1 m² more or less for every 10 kg away from a 75 kg frame. In Essaouira, we match the size to each session based on the day's wind.

![Kitesurf gear in Essaouira](/images/blog/choisir-materiel-kitesurf/kitesurf-essaouira-action-2.webp)

## Choosing your board

To learn and ride, a wide, forgiving twin-tip makes the waterstart and going upwind easier. Smaller, livelier boards come later, with [progression](/en/blog/progression-kitesurf-etapes).

## The harness

Seat harness for beginners: more stable, it sits low and spares your back. Waist harness once you're comfortable, for more freedom of movement.

## Buy or rent?

When starting out, no need to buy: gear is provided during [kitesurf lessons](/en/kitesurf-essaouira). Once independent, [gear rental](/en/kitesurf-rental-essaouira) lets you ride without carrying your quiver. Buying only makes sense if you ride very regularly.

## The right instinct in Essaouira

Kite size depends on wind, and wind changes every day. Understanding [the wind window](/en/blog/fenetre-vent-kitesurf) helps you sense whether you're well sized. For the rest, the [complete guide to kitesurfing in Essaouira](/en/blog/guide-kitesurf-essaouira) puts it all in context.27:T718,The wind window is the most important concept in kitesurf — and the most misunderstood at first. Once you have it in mind, everything makes sense: power, control, the waterstart. Here's a simple explanation.

## What is the wind window

Picture a quarter-sphere in front of you, with your back to the wind. That's the space where your kite can fly. Depending on where you place the kite in that window, you generate more or less power. All of piloting lives in there.

## The power zone

It's the center of the window, where the kite pulls hardest. You send the kite there to generate traction, at the waterstart for example. Spend too long in the power zone as a beginner and you get yanked.

![Flying the kite in the wind window in Essaouira](/images/blog/fenetre-vent-kitesurf/kitesurf-essaouira-vol-instructeur.webp)

## The edge of the window

On the sides, the kite pulls far less: it's the neutral zone, ideal for positioning and keeping control. A beginner spends most of their time here to avoid being overpowered.

## The zenith

The kite straight up, right above your head: minimal power. It's the safety and rest position, the first one you learn.

## Why it's the foundation of everything

Managing power means knowing where to put the kite. The waterstart, going upwind, jumps: everything rests on your reading of the window. That's exactly what we work on from the first hours in our [kitesurf lessons](/en/kitesurf-essaouira).

## Learning it in Essaouira

Essaouira's steady wind is perfect for feeling the window without nasty surprises. We start on the beach, then in the water. The logical next steps: the [beginner guide](/en/blog/apprendre-kitesurf-essaouira-debutant) and the [progression steps](/en/blog/progression-kitesurf-etapes).
