Mohamed AchhibatNational Kitesurf Champion · IKO InstructorNever touched a kite before? Even better. Essaouira is arguably the best place in the world to learn kitesurf, and we'll walk you through exactly how your first lesson goes, how long it takes, and what to bring.
Why learn to kitesurf in Essaouira
The wind is steady, with no violent gusts. Essaouira bay and Diabat beach have a sandy bottom, plenty of space and few waves — everything you need to learn safely. And the water stays pleasant from March to October, with no thick wetsuit in summer.
The progression, step by step
- Kite control on the beach, then in the water (body drag). We always start with safety: how to release the kite and use the quick release.
- Advanced body drag and first waterstart attempts. You feel the kite's pull and start gliding.
- Waterstart. The moment everything clicks — most of our students get there here.
- Riding and going upwind. You become independent.

How many lessons to get started
Plan around 3 sessions to nail the waterstart, and 5 to 6 to ride independently. It depends on the wind and your consistency. We teach to the IKO standards, applied by certified instructors, with a low ratio so you progress fast and safely.
How much it costs
Group lessons start at €65 for 2 hours, private at €110. A 6h pack comes to €180 in a group (€315 private). The full breakdown is in our kitesurf prices in Essaouira article.
